Salt Lake County Kennecott Tailings Impoundment Committee
Purpose Statement: To assure safety and protection of the Magna community; the Salt Lake County Council has formed the Kennecott Tailings Impoundment Committee to develop, commission, and report an analysis of the seismic stability of the South and East sides (from 1700 South to 9400 West) of the Kennecott Utah Copper Companies South Tailings Impoundment. The Committee will exercise general control and supervision over the project and consultants hired to perform the analysis. The Committee and consultants are independent and will demonstrate impartiality in reaching the Committee’s final investigative conclusions.
The Committee is further charged with creating the scope of work and criteria for a Request for Proposal from qualified firms to perform the study of the Impoundment, selecting a firm to perform the study, and to inform the community of the findings.
